Ulster Bank has announced that its customers can now use Android Pay from today at contactless payment terminals to buy goods and services in pubs, shops and restaurants.

Android phone users will be able to safely, swiftly and securely make a payment by waving their mobile over a contactless payment terminal. This means more convenience for customers saving them from having to use cash for small payments. Ulster Bank offers no transaction charges and there is no additional fee for using Android Pay.

Away from shops, customers can also use Android Pay to make ‘in-app purchases’ so that they don’t need to fill out their full card details every time they want to buy something directly through their mobile, but can simply use Android Pay to verify the purchase.

Android Pay doesn’t share actual credit or debit card numbers with stores so it’s even safer than using a card. If a phone is ever lost or stolen, customers can simply use Android Device Manager to instantly lock their device from anywhere, secure it with a new password, or wipe it clean of personal information.

Ulster Bank’s Director of Customer Experience and Products Maeve McMahon said:

“Android Pay is a great way for our customers to quickly, easily and securely make a purchase with just a tap of their mobile. The way in which our customers bank with us is changing radically. In 2016, 62% of customer interactions were digital. We saw a 22% increase in active users of our mobile app and our ‘Get Cash’ facility was used over 2,000 times a week. Android Pay will save many of our customers from having to carry cash around to make small purchases and is another great example of customer-focused innovation and how we’re helping to make banking with us simpler and more convenient.”

Pali Bhat, Director, Product Management, Android Pay said:

“We’ve seen a great response to Android Pay in Ireland since the launch in December and now we’re excited to bring the simplicity and security of mobile payments to Ulster Bank customers with Android Pay.”

Android Pay is available to Ulster Bank customers with an Android phone which is NFC-enabled and running on KitKat 4.4 or higher.
