A Sligo restaurant has installed one of the world’s leading pieces of music technology, Amazon’s Echo, becoming one of the first in the country to do so.

Although the Amazon Echo, a hands-free speaker you control with your voice, is not yet available to buy in Ireland, it has been installed in all the private function rooms at The Embassy Steakhouse in the centre of town.

Operated by Alexa, Amazon’s virtual personal assistant who ‘lives’ inside the Echo smart speaker, the device has been likened to a modern-day jukebox.

The private rooms in the Embassy Steakhouse can hold up to 36 people and guests now have their own personal DJ, without the extra costs involved.

The device allows partygoers to shout out their favourite tunes without having the leave the dance floor. Or diners can enjoy a meal with friends taking turns to call out songs to suit the mood without moving from their seats.

The same voice recognition technology is used by many world-famous businesses like BMW and Wynn Hotels Las Vegas. Last December, the Wynn hotel received much publicity for its decision to install the Echo speakers in all 4,700 rooms at its Las Vegas premises.

The Embassy Steakhouse, located on John F Kennedy Parade, is owned by the Quinn family, which runs a number of other businesses in the town.

Speaking to Irish Tech News Fergal Quinn said: “We are always looking at ways that we can make all our businesses – whether it is the restaurant, our nightclub, pubs or our hen and stag party package company – better for our customers. We think we are the first restaurant in Ireland to install the Echo”.

“While the Echo is not yet available to buy in Ireland, we thought it would be a great addition to our private function rooms. The new technology connects to the Alexa Voice Service, together with surround sound speakers. It is particularly popular with the parties we bring into the private dining rooms from our sister company HenandStagligo.ie”.

Amazon Echo has seven microphones and beamforming technology so it can hear you from across the room—even while music is playing. The expertly tuned speaker can fill any room with 360° immersive sound. And it’s simple to use, just say the word “Alexa” and Echo responds instantly.
