Describe the company – the elevator pitch …

PereGreen Energy provide Intelligent LED lighting solutions to the industrial sector, making facilities smarter and more productive. We work with clients across Ireland to design and install cost-effective intelligent LED lighting systems that do more, using less.

How are you different?

Our IoT-based intelligent LEDs can save businesses up to 90% in energy costs, versus traditional lighting solutions, and crucially provide easy access to energy consumption data that can help operations be more productive, use their space more efficiently and manage energy costs across their entire enterprise.

Through the lighting systems that we provide to clients, every light is a data gathering sensor. So, in addition to saving money and improving light levels and quality, facilities now have hundreds of ‘mini-satellites’ in the ceiling, feeding back information on energy consumption, occupancy, how the facility is operating and where it can improve. The platform, which can be accessed from a computer or smart device, generates data down to the kWh and € – an important factor in helping businesses achieve their sustainability targets.

Why will the company/product do well?

Industry is demanding more from its systems and are recognising that as such an integral part of operations, lighting systems have the potential to do more than just provide light. In fact light is almost a byproduct at this stage! The real ‘smarts’ is in the information that the lights generate and how that information is used to get operational insights.

The cost benefits of changing over to LED are well proven at this stage, and savings of 50-60% should be expected. But that’s not good enough. We need to aim for savings of 90% and not only that, but we need to know exactly how, when and where that remaining 10% is being used within a facility. Our clients need a system that generates a report weekly, daily, hourly so that they can see what they are consuming, where they are consuming it, how they compared to last month or last week and how they can reduce it.

PereGreen’s smart lighting installations, combine connected lighting, IoT sensors, and software to create next-generation smart buildings. These systems are ideal for new developments that recognise the benefits of overhead intelligence and they can also be retrofitted into existing lighting systems with little or no interruption to operations.

Where are you based?

We are based in the Tom Crean Business Centre at Kerry Technology Park in Tralee, Co. Kerry.

When was the company launched?

As a civil  engineer by trade, I spent 15 years working in civils, renewables and cleantech across Europe, South Africa, the Middle East and Asia. In 2011 I went to work on Reunion Island near Madagascar and it was here that I began to see the true potential for sustainable living. Reunion is small island in the Indian ocean, about the size of Leinster. As it’s so remote and everything needs to be imported, they have been on an energy efficiency drive for decades, with the goal of becoming as close to self-sufficient as possible. The island is well ahead of the curve in terms of renewables & clean technology and is seen as a testing-ground for new technology.

Energised by my experience on Reunion Island, I returned home and started to work on the concept of PereGreen Energy. Along with my sister, Marie Looby, we launched in 2013 and have been steadily growing since.

I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to join with my sister on this venture and it works really well due to our complementary skill-set. Marie brings an extensive knowledge of finance, product sales and project management to the business, from her ten-year experience with globally recognized, Fortune 500 Company, General Electric, including two years as Assistant Vice President of Financial Operations.

What have been your biggest wins to date?

Probably our biggest win to date has been the project we started in 2016 for O’Carroll Engineering. They deliver industrial and commercial metalwork solutions, from design through to finish fabrication, operating double shifts, out of an 80,000ft2 facility in Kerry.

Efficiency & Lean production is at the core of everything they do and in 2016 they identified lighting as a key area for energy reduction. They had three goals for the project: 1. Reduce energy consumption and costs; 2. Eliminate maintenance costs; 3. Increase light levels on the factory floor. Having considered a number of options, PereGreen won the contract to replace the lighting in two of the main fabrication halls with our intelligent system. Since the installation over a year ago they have been astounded by the results. We met and exceeded our targets in the three key areas. Since then we have gone on to install a second and a third phase and will complete phase four in Q4 2017.

This project was especially gratifying given the traditional nature of the business and the scepticism of the team when we began the project! It took a massive leap of faith for them to invest in such a progressive system and they have been blown away by the results.

What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract to your product?

PereGreen’s energy solutions are perfectly suited for industrial clients, where large, and often wide-open spaces with high ceilings, result in high energy costs that strain facility budgets. We also work with select commercial clients. Specific applications include Warehousing & Cold Storage, Manufacturing, Logistics, Pharmaceutical and Treatment facilities.

Our technical and in-house design teams work directly with Architects, Engineers, Building Contractors and Project Managers to provide bespoke designs for industrial new-build lighting projects. Using Autocad and Dialux, PereGreen’s design team can quickly and accurately turnaround lighting layouts and energy spend calculations, based on a variety of lumen options.

We also work with Facility and Maintenance Managers and Environmental and Energy Managers to save thousands of €uros on annual energy costs on existing premises. Our retrofit team excels at recommending the best energy efficient LED lighting that meets design, budget and energy saving goals.

Tell us about your team?

The core team operates out of our offices in Kerry Technology Park in Tralee. This the brains of the operation where lighting design, accounts, sales & marketing are based. We have off-site warehouse facilities to deal with goods in/out.

All of our installation work is subcontracted, using a number of contractors that have been with us since day one. It is our goal to bring the installation inhouse within the next year.

What are your long term plans for your product/company?

The lights and the software are the heart of the system. Once that is installed our clients can start to add other units that they want to monitor. From the one laptop they can monitor and control; the lights; remote sensors like temperature & humidity; non lighting loads such as plant and machinery; security & access to secure zones; asset tracking; space optimizing & path tracking.

All this from a cloud-based platform where a manager can monitor and control multiple sites from anywhere at anytime.

We will continue to work with large energy users in the industrial and pharmaceutical sector, but we already see many growth opportunities for such a system

What are your favourite tech gadgets?

When I was younger it was radio controlled cars and trucks – now it’s drones! Specifically the DJi Mavic Pro. It’s just unbelievable what these machines can do and how far they have come in such a short time.

My aspirational tech goal is to own a Tesla Model 3. It’s not just that it looks cool and performs well, it’s what this car stands for and the impact it’s going to make. It has the ability to make a very real & monumental impact on the planet. Its an exciting time and must be what it was like when Ford launched the model T!

What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?

While I personally love all things tech and our product is cutting edge in terms of technology, on a day-to-day operational business, there is no substitute for a personal call or face to face meeting. On any given week, I’m out on the road 3-4 days, visiting sites and meeting with clients and I wouldn’t want to automate that process. It’s what I love most about my work.

Anything else you’d like to add/we should have asked?

I think one common misconception companies have about intelligent lighting systems is that they cost a fortune to install and are cost prohibitive as a result.

While there is an initial cost involved, with funding and grants available for companies who commit to sustainable lighting projects, there’s never been a better time to invest.  As part of our service offering, we work with clients to secure funding for projects and offer alternative financing options for select projects, such as ‘Pay As You Save’.

After the investment stage, our typical client sees a full return on project cost, on average, within 18 months.

How do people get in touch with you?

I’m always available for an informal chat to discuss lighting projects or design. I can be reached on +353 87786 8447 or [email protected].
